At last it appears that I might be returning to a kind of artistic normality. Over the past few days I have managed to do a couple of drawings which give me some kind of satisfaction. The first was a kind of “homage to Georgio Morandi” and the second an informal self-portrait. Neither of these would I want to offer for exhibition, but there are both competent pieces of draftsmanship. Added to the fact that I am involved once again in exhibiting my work I am encouraged to think that I might not have lost touch with art altogether.
The impact of moving house has been far more severe than I might have anticipated, in that it has engaged all my energies and my imagination. There is, after all, a measure of creativity in the making of a new home, not only at the practical level but in terms of the emotions and the imagination. Its could be said that this has been one gigantic creative act which has left little room or energy for anything else. A measure of the severity of my problem has been the fact that my new studio has been nothing more than a store room and in no way the context for creativity.
I hope that this phase is behind me now, and it will be possible to continue to protect space and energy for art.
