…. it’s nice to have some public profile, however humble. This month’s copy of The Artist features my contribution as its “star letter”. Fancy that!
My point was that the majority of their articles focus on the importance of looking and seeing, which is fair enough, but I wanted to know why we don’t have more pieces about the importance of imagination.
Seriously, however, I do find it interesting that the most popular genres of art (at least in the UK) are landscape, portraiture and animals, followed, I suppose, by still life. In all of these skill in representation is prioritised over the capacity of the imagination to take us to situations and experiences and states of mind which lie outside our direct experience.
It’s no surprise that I don’t find it easy to find exhibiting outlets. I would be interested to hear from colleagues with a similar problem.
