I have just realised that there is a particularly important process in selecting work for exhibition. I have two coming up in the next couple of months. The first will be at the Apothecary Gallery, in Thornton, and the second at the South Square Centre. As I get into the planning process I am coming to realise more and more clearly that it is not only a matter of selecting good work, piece by piece, but also a question of developing a sense that there is some kind of coherent focus for the exhibition. It makes a statement. I started the process by believing that I had to pick out the individual pieces which would be most likely to sell. Then it occurred to me that the attractiveness of any one picture its likely to be enhanced by the way in which it finds a place within the overall impression, and sense of coherence, created by the show as a whole.
