Facing the future

Perhaps the tides turned. I would like to think so.

We spent this weekend with the family of one of my sons, in Sheffield. It was a really pleasant visit, with the usual country walking around the Derwent Valley, not to mention the pleasures of their hospitality. The high-point of the event for me, however, was our drawing session.

I have been aware of my grandson’s interest in art for a long time. Indeed, there are several comments in earlier postings about the occasions when we have spent time drawing or painting together. This time, however, my son suggested a session in which the three of us all got out the art materials. As I have tried portrait sketches of my wife on several occasions of late, I decided that it would be interesting to do one of my son. It has turned out quite well, and I am certainly encouraged to think of work in this direction in the future.

A curious feature of the event, however, was that the others both drew images from their imaginations, rather than from observation. It is interesting to reflect of why that might have been the case.

On one of our walks it also spotted a couple of images which could possibly serve as the basis for more finished landscape pictures. A good deal of thinking is still required, because my bits of reference material certainly don’t lend themselves to direct copying. Even so, it is very encouraging tone thinking about future work once again, after such a fallow period.
